Experience of the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 11, 2011 by Hano's Mother

The “Bring Tohoku Kids to Swiss Camps!” Project invited a 3rd-grade girl, Hanon, from Sendai which was hit by the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 11, 2011. She attended a 1-week Winter camp in Schönried, Switzerland.

Here is the essay from the mother of Hanon about her daughter joining the winter camp in Switzerland.

Joining the Winter Camp in Switzerland

Thank you for the invitation to the Winter Camp on such a special year as the 150th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between Switzerland and Japan.

I had a reservation on applying for the camp as what we experienced during the earthquake was minor as compared with those who had disastrous experiences in the coastal region of Northern Japan. However, three years and half later, I now decided this would give us a chance to reflect what happened on that day, as time flies by in our busy lives.

Discussing the earthquake day with my daughter was an extremely meaningful time.  It was least expected that my daughter would be given an opportunity to join the camp. I am still astonished and most grateful.

In retrospect, my daughter was always rather a quiet and introverted girl. What changed her was the exposure to the world of English. Once she started to go to an international preschool, she was in her element and came to proactively take up new challenges in life.

When this camp opportunity came up, I reminded her of the main purpose of this project, and also said to her a several times:

“Do you realize that you will be all alone from Narita to Switzerland? There is a chance that there may be no any other Japanese – is that OK?”

I had to repeat this a few times. But her response was

“No problem! I am so looking forward to it!”

I saw her eyes with full of excitement.

New friends, new scenery, foreign food, skiing in beautiful and magnificent mountains, English lessons, and identity awareness as a “Japanese”… Every single moment she will experience in Switzerland will be best treasure of her life time, and I am convinced that they will be a great asset of her life as she grows up.

I wish to see, upon her return, Hanon will grow into a person with a thoughtful and strong mind, appreciating love as well as sorrow, with a competence to put her ideas into actions – through her experiences to meet those project staff members as well as sponsors including the project key person Ms Tayama and volunteers.

Thank you very much to all who have given my daughter such a wonderful opportunity.
